Are Social Security disability benefits available if I became disabled after I left my old job and am unemployed?

Yes. One of the requirements for Social Security disability benefits is that you'll not be working. We'll not have substantial gain for activity SGA, meaning that if you have wages either in excess of $1,000 a month is a substantially good litmus test, but if you're making $1,000 a month, you more than likely won't be qualified to receive Social Security disability benefits. People that are amputees that are making more than a $1,000 OR $2,000 a month will be medically determined to be disabled, but because they're working and making more than SGA levels, then they could not receive the Social Security disability benefits.
