Does my own private disability insurance offset or limit the amount of Social Security benefits I receive?

Your private disability insurance will offset the amount of SSDI benefits you receive. However, it depends on the policy, it depends on the age of the policy. Back in the day, your policies that are over 20 years old now, there were no offset provisions and a good number of them, but today there are a number of direct offsets. You used to be able to double-dip, bur over the past 12 to 15 years, there's been a general gravitation towards disallowing and double-dipping at both the state and federal levels and for short-term and long-term private disability policies.
