What will the ALJ ask about my doctors?

It is up to the ALJ to make sure your file is complete prior to the ALJ rendering a decision in your case.  You will have to look at the contents of your file prior to hearing.  One will be provided to you at the hearing office upon request, prior to your hearing and at the time of your hearing so you can check it to make sure your medical file is complete.  If it is not complete, be prepared to either submit the records at your hearing or to give the ALJ the names and addresses of all your doctors and all hospitals at which you have been treated that do not show up on your social security medical record..  Please be prepared to also include the approximate date that you went to the hospital or doctor, the type of physician and for what you went.  You may also want to list all your current medications, how much you take, how often, for what medical problem and who prescribed it and describe any effects or side effects that would affect your return to work.

Be prepared to describe whether you have any problems hearing, seeing, talking or writing and if  you suffer from pain, inclusive of headache and what you have to do to contend with that particular pain, if any.  For example if it is mild, moderate or extreme, how often and how long does the pain last, are pains dull or sharp, do they vary with the weather? How long have you had the pain?   What do you do to stop the pain? How long does it take before the pain goes away?  Is the pain increasing, decreasing or staying the same? Do you have an problems with or doing the following like:  Lifting, Stooping ,Eyes, Bending, Running, Ears, Jumping, Reaching, Balance, Climbing stairs and ladders, Kneeling , Speech, Walking, Crawling, Memory  and to describe those limitations and any limitations in your physical physical ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, lift and push after the onset of disability and the reasons for any limitations.  If you suffer from Carpal or Cubital Tunnel problems, Raynaud’s Syndrome, Shoulder problems, you may also be asked to describe your physical ability to move limbs, grasp and use hands after the onset of your disability, your ability to fully move your limbs, arms, wrists, fingers, your ability to grasp objects, to do fine manipulation (type, thread a needle, remove and replace and bolt, open jars etc. and the reasons for those limitations.
